The Doctoral Program in Economics at School of Economics and Management, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (SEM-HUST) is designed for researchers, lecturers, and economics professionals seeking to advance their capabilities in economic analysis, forecasting, and policy development in the context of globalization and digital transformation. By integrating strengths in science and technology with a modern economics foundation, the program enables doctoral candidates to access advanced research methodologies and address practical economic challenges.

The doctoral program of School of Economics and Management, Hanoi University of Science and Technology consists of 106 credits and is designed in accordance with international education standards with a strong emphasis on practical application. Study Duration

  • Program Duration: The program is delivered in a full-time format, with a standard duration of 3 to 4 years for candidates holding a master’s degree, and 4 years for candidates entering with a bachelor’s degree.

Admission Criteria

Admission Eligibility: 

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree with a classification of Good or above, or an equivalent qualification at Level 7 of the Vietnamese National Qualifications Framework relevant to the doctoral program they are applying for.

  • Applicants must demonstrate research experience through one of the following: a master’s thesis from a research-oriented program; authorship or co-authorship of published academic papers or scientific reports; or at least two years (24 months) of professional experience as a lecturer or researcher at educational institutions or science and technology organizations. 

Language Proficiency Requirements:  

  • Applicants hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a foreign language major, or have completed a university program taught in a foreign language;
  • Applicants who graduated from Hanoi University of Science and Technology within the past two years and achieved a language proficiency outcome equivalent to Level 3 or higher are eligible to apply;
  • Applicants possess a valid foreign language certificate equivalent to Level 3 or higher under the Vietnamese 6-Level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework, or another equivalent certificate recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), issued within the past two years in accordance with current regulations. Application and Admission Documents

 The application dossier includes the following required documents (application forms can be downloaded from the admission portal): Candidate Application Forms):

  1. Application Form (printed from the online registration system);
  2. Academic Curriculum Vitae of the applicant (according to Form BM01);
  3. Academic Profiles of the Supervisory Team (according to Form BM02);
  4. At least one recommendation letter from a scientist holding the title of Professor/Associate Professor or a doctoral degree, who has engaged in professional activities with the applicant and possesses expertise in the applicant’s intended research field. The recommendation letter should evaluate the applicant’s professional qualities, academic competence, and research potential (according to Form BM03);
  5. Confirmation of Supervision Agreement by the Supervisory Team (according to Form BM04);
  6. Notarized copies of university and master’s degree diplomas and academic transcripts. Degrees awarded by foreign educational institutions must additionally include official degree recognition in accordance with current regulations;
  7. Notarized copies of foreign language diplomas and certificates;
  8. A research proposal endorsed by the supervisor(s) (including two signed hard copies and one electronic version uploaded to the online application system), covering the following contents: literature review, rationale for selecting the research topic, research objectives, proposed research tasks, and expected outcomes (according to Form BM05);
  9. Copies of published scientific papers and academic publications (including two hard copies and one electronic version uploaded to the online application system) (according to Form BM06);
  10. Comprehensive Study and Research Plan for the entire doctoral program (02 hard copies) (according to Form BM07);
  11. Official nomination letter from the applicant’s employing organization approving participation in the doctoral admission process;
  12. Judicial Record Certificate (applicable to applicants who are not affiliated with any organization or institution).
