The World of Academic Journals and Publishing: Experience and Insights

On December 21, 2023, the School of Economics and Management – Hanoi University of Science and Technology was honored to welcome Professor Charles Cho to share with the students as well as university members about a very important field in the academic world, which is the process and experience of publishing articles in academic journals.

Professor Charles H. Cho is a Department of Sustainability Accounting member at the Schulich School of Business, York University, Canada. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from the University of Central Florida. He also spent time working at KPMG and other large companies in the fields of audit and tax. Professor Cho’s research interests include Social and Environmental Accounting; Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); and Accounting and the Public Interest. He has published several research in leading academic journals such as Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, the European Accounting Review, and Journal of Business Ethics.

Currently, he is holding the position of Editor of the Accounting Forum; Co-Editor of the Journal of Business Ethics; and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Business & Society Magazine. Professor Cho is also actively involved in the academic community as a Board member of the Center for Social and Environmental Accounting Research and as Chair of the Partnership Committee Chair of the International Associates Committee of this center. He is regularly invited as a keynote speaker at international scientific conferences and events and is sought after by the media thanks to his extensive knowledge in his field. In 2019, he was honored as one of the 2% most cited scholars in the field of Accounting worldwide (ranked 34th in the world and 1st in Canada).

This seminar is not only a valuable opportunity for listeners to better understand the rigorous process and standards set by academic journals but also a place for everyone to ask questions directly and discuss the challenges and opportunities in publishing their research. Professor Cho shared valuable lessons from his experience about the process of evaluating a scientific article as well as tips to help research articles become more professional. In particular, he emphasized the importance of developing and maintaining a professional image in the academic field, as well as strategies to increase the impact of research in the international academic environment. One of the highlights of the discussion was that Professor Cho provided specific strategies to optimize the publication process, including selecting appropriate journals and how to access diverse opportunities.

This event not only provides useful information and knowledge about publishing articles in scientific journals but also marks the collaborative relationship between Professor Cho in particular and the Schulich School of Business in general with the School of Economics and Management – Hanoi University of Science and Technology. After the event, Professor Cho expressed his joy and excitement when receiving enthusiastic interactions from students and staff of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. He believes that with the right direction and available resources, the School of Economics and Management in particular and Hanoi University of Science and Technology will have great potential to contribute and develop a strong influence within the academic field worldwide.

The seminar has ended, but its echoes still linger, with the hope of opening many doors for students and school members on their journey to accomplish new levels in the field of scientific research and academic publishing. This will certainly be one of the memorable events of the School of Economics and Management in the last few days of 2023, marking an important step in improving academic publishing quality and collaborative relationships with global educational institutions.
